Veniamin Fedorovich Yakovlev (1932 – 2018)

On July 24, it was four years since Veniamin Fedorovich Yakovlev, an outstanding Russian jurist, a prominent representative of the Ural School of Law, a statesman, adviser to the President of the Russian Federation, Doctor of Law, professor, passed away.

V.F. Yakovlev was born on February 12, 1932 in the village of Yudino of the Yudinsky Village Council of the Ural region (now the city of Petukhovo of the Kurgan region). He graduated from school in the city of Ishim, Tyumen region. In 1953 he graduated from the Sverdlovsk Law Institute with a degree in jurisprudence.

From 1953 — teacher, from 1954 to 1956 — director of the Yakut Law School. From 1956 to 1960 — Senior assistant prosecutor of the Yakut ASSR.

Since 1963 — Senior lecturer, then Dean of the Part-time Faculty of the Sverdlovsk Law Institute. In 1973, V. F. Yakovlev defended his doctoral dissertation "Civil law method of regulating public relations". From 1973 to 1987 — Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs and Head of the Department of Civil Law of the Sverdlovsk Law Institute.

From 1987 to 1989 — Director of the Research Institute of Soviet State Construction and Legislation. From 1988 to 1989 - Deputy Chairman of the Public Commission for International Cooperation on Humanitarian Issues and Human Rights.

From 1989 to 1990 – Minister of Justice of the USSR, from 1990 to 1991 was the Chief State Arbitrator of the USSR and Chairman of the Supreme Arbitration Court of the USSR. In April 1992, by the Congress of People's Deputies of the Russian Federation, he was elected Chairman of the Supreme Arbitration Court of the Russian Federation.

Since January 31, 2005, he has been an adviser to the President of the Russian Federation. He was repeatedly reassigned to the post of presidential adviser, most recently on June 13, 2018.

From February 15, 2005 to 2009 — Representative of the President of the Russian Federation in the Higher Qualification Board of Judges.

V.F. Yakovlev has been a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences since 2003. He was the head of the Association of Lawyers of Russia from the moment of its creation in 2005, later – its co-chairman. He was the head of the Private Law Center named after S.S. Alekseev.

He died on July 24, 2018 in Moscow. He was buried at the Shirokorechenskoye Cemetery in Yekaterinburg.

On February 9, 2022, the Ural State Law University was named after Veniamin Fedorovich Yakovlev.

Today, on July 25, flowers were laid at the memorial plaque in memory of Veniamin Fedorovich at the building of the main educational building of the USLU on Komsomolskaya, 21.
