July 20 – Chess Day

Today, on July 20, the sports community celebrates the International Chess Day. The holiday has been celebrated annually since 1966.

Chess is a complex logical game on a 64–cell board, with elements of art, science and sports. The history of chess goes back centuries: the game has more than one and a half thousand years. It is believed that chess was preceded by the Indian game of Chaturanga, which originated around the VI century AD.

Chess is perhaps the most famous intellectual game in the history of mankind; for many years, the ability to play chess was considered an attribute of an educated person.

It is worth noting that the representatives of the USLU named after V.F. Yakovlev are no strangers to the noble game.

So, at the chess blitz tournament held at the end of June this year as part of the X session of the St. Petersburg Legal Forum, Vice-Rector for Science Andrey Vladimirovich Vinnitsky won a landslide victory.

And shortly before that, on May 5, 2022, our university hosted the first interdepartmental chess tournament dedicated to Victory Day. The competitions were held according to the Swiss system in five rounds with time control – ten minutes each per game.

The chess tournament was held in order to popularize chess and unite the teaching staff of the university.

There is a chess club at the university, which is led by Ivan Shavyrkin, a student of the Institute of Justice. By the way, he was the winner of the competition for the prizes of Anatoly Karpov. Also strong chess players are students of Institute of the Prosecutor's Office Alexey Fedoseev and Vyacheslav Ekimov, and this year's graduate of Institute of Justice Danil Efimov.

For three years in a row, the USLU national team took prizes among the universities of the Sverdlovsk region: two years in a row – the third, and one – the second.

A number of competitions are held at the university – the Open Cup of the Institute of Justice in the team competition, the Spartakiad in Chess between institutes and others.
